Alongside setting the artistic direction for the 2019 Chicago Architecture Biennial, Umolu recently curated a number of upcoming projects at the Logan Center Gallery including exhibitions with Candice Lin, Mariana Castillo Deball, and Karthik Pandian and Andros Zins-Browne. Umolu is also leading a multi-year research project, public program and online platform that explores the history of Pan-Africanism and its articulation in the art and culture of the contemporary African diaspora.

As an independent curator, Umolu recently curated the recent exhibition Journeys with the initiated at e-flux and Participant, Inc. in New York centered on the writings of German novelist, poet and self-taught ethnographer Hubert Fichte (1935–1986). Umolu's project is part of the three-year exhibition and publication project titled Hubert Fichte: Love and Ethnology initiated by The Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW), Berlin and the Goethe Institute, and led by Diedrich Diederichsen  and Anselm Franke.
